Beschreibung

André Masson (1896-1987), French painter and graphic artist, studied in Brussels and Paris and became one of the main representatives of Surrealism. He had a considerable influence on a subsequent generation of artists in the USA. Originally influenced by Cubism, Surrealism gave him access to the psychological sources of art, the depths of which he sought to explore with the help of automatism. He drew significant inspiration from nature, which he expressed in his own fascinatingly heightened mythological metaphors. For the first time, Museum Würth is shedding light on this aspect of his work by means of numerous paintings and the never before presented drawing cycle „Sur le thème du désir“. The accompanying catalog volume is rich in illustrations and includes articles that provide an insightful analysis of Masson’s theme and work.
